Poetry Night with Safety In Words

  • The Space 269 Westferry Road London, England, E14 3RS United Kingdom (map)

We’re absolutely buzzing to announce we’re hosting a poetry night with Safety in Words in London, on the 20th of August 2023 at 6pm. Come and join us!

We’ll be kicking off Series 2 with this event, getting together to get curious about feminist theory through poetry. We’re teaming up with Joanna Woźnicka from Safety in Words to host our poetry night, with a headliner poet, an open-mic space, drinks, conversation, space to ask questions, learn and share.

We’re delighted to say that Ella Frears will be our headliner poet for the evening. She was shortlisted for the T.S. Eliot Prize for Poetry and is author of Shine, Darling. Find our more about her work below.

See below for information on content warnings.

Tickets

It’s really important that what we get up to is mega-accessible - that’s the whole point of Grabbing Back. This is the first time we’ve run a ticketed event, so we’re still figuring out how to do it best. For now, we’re asking people to Pay-What-You-Can, with ticket options from £5 to £15.

If the £5 ticket is a barrier to you coming, please email either Grabbing Back or Joanna so we can work something out.

If you have a bit of financial flexibility at the moment and you’d like to pay a higher ticket price to support others coming who can’t afford that, we’d really appreciate it.

What’s happening on the night?

Get yourselves down to the Space for 6pm. It’s going to be a relaxed evening to listen to feminist poetry and get to the bottom of it.

  • Poetry shared by our wonderful submitters from the wider Grabbing Back community

  • Set by poet and artist, Ella Frears

  • Drinks and discussion - have a chance to either chat with one another or ask our poets questions about what they’ve shared

  • Dictionary definitions - we’re going to do some real-time, in-person, defining of some key concepts that come up in our poetry and in Series 2. You’ll get a chance you really get to the bottom of them by asking our team millions of questions

  • Open mic! At the end of the evening, we’ll have a space for anyone to come up and grab the mic, and share their poetry

Content warnings and safety: the poetry that is read on the night will touch upon gender based violence. At the beginning of the event, we will provide more specific content warnings. People will be able to leave to get some space at any moment throughout the night, and we will encourage everyone to interact with the content in a way that is healthy and safe for them. If you have any questions in the meantime, please contact general@grabbingback.com.

Series 2

Grabbing Back’s aim is to make feminist theory easier to access and understand. We produce articles, podcasts and dictionary definitions exploring and explaining feminist theory, and we create this content in series. Series 1 was published in 2022, and Series 2 is well underway. We will be looking at:

  • Feminism and the body

  • Feminism and nature

  • Feminism and the home

  • Feminism and money

  • Feminism and backlash

At our poetry night, we’ll be hearing poems about some of these themes and exploring them together. We’re really excited to be kicking off Series 2 with those of you based in London, in person, and through poetry!
