Economic Abuse
Economic abuse is a form of domestic abuse that involves controlling the victim's money, finances, and access to necessities. It limits their freedom and safety by making them economically dependent on the abuser. Examples of economic abuse include preventing the victim from working or studying, taking or controlling their income or benefits, restricting their spending or access to bank accounts, forcing them into debt or damaging their credit, and controlling their use of property, utilities, transport, or technology.
This coercive and controlling behaviour often occurs alongside other types of abuse, such as physical, sexual, or psychological. Economic abuse has lasting effects on the victim's well-being, health, education, and participation in society.
